Usually you never thenk why do I think this way or why do I act that way .... so that was funny to see that overs did not think or act as me and my fellow citizen ! If you don't know French and wantto spend time there .... read this book, you'll understand more how thing worh there (pay attention on the paragraphe related to food & wine ... real religion here). One trick wen you want to speak inEnglish to someone you don't know .. after the "bonjour" ask him / her if s-he speaks English (Parlez-vous anglais) as s-he could be hurt if you start speaking in English ! then th communication will be probably broken.
